I have been using IM since 1995/1996 starting with “procomm plus” then ICQ (my number is in the first 600,000)
Now there are multiple clients, windows live, yahoo, aim, gtalk, facebook, myspace, icq, and more. Take all the IM programs, and the multi clients, trillian, digsby, pidgen. meebo, etc.; I have used them all. Nothing seems good enough to me. Adium on the mac is the best I have used so far.
What I am trying to do now is consolidate. I am going to try to just use google talk with my firstname.lastname@example.org account and will see how that goes. I will still keep my other accounts but probably won’t sign in as often. This is an experiment so we will see how it turns out.
Feel free to add me and chat/IM !!

I have been using IM since at at least 1995, started off with a company I don’t even remember their name that was pre AOL. Then with AOL started chatting there, moved on to IRC channels, microsoft, ICQ, and gtalk. Used to send 6+ hours IMing on AOL and IRC, parents couldn’t use the phone.
To really bring this full circle two people I IMed all the time in the 90s and then didn’t talk to in over a decade found me in the past year on facebook.
I used to be plugged in to IM, AIM, yahoo, msn, icq, trillian. I just ended up turning the damn thing off because it would prevent me from getting things done while i was online. Not sure, I might consider installing it. I dunno.
Same here…I’ve gone back and forth on using dedicated IM clients (Yahoo Messenger, MSN, AOL, etc..) when I wanted to chat with those friends from those networks. Then I tried the many multi-protocol clients too…and in the early years they really sucked so I went back to using the dedicated clients.
I’m still torn…so I used Digsby because it has the most plugable, and still use individual clients when i need to get in conteact that way. I have a couple blog posts about this too.
Check those out…I should write up a new one!
