Oddball Shoe Company: Finally, I can buy shoes..

Went out today on a mission to pick up a new pair of kix, headed down 23rd Ave, hit some shops up, found a cool pair of Nike SB’s at Exit Real World

image

Which are cool, but I wanted something else more low key. The guy at the shop was like, “Check out Oddball’s”, ook, so I looked it up on my phone, and walked on down. Oddballs, yeah, I am an oddball I figured. Size 14. I get there, and the whole store is like bigger shoes, but cool shoes. They have video games, they have beer. Nice place. So I bought a pair of Van’s there too.

Finally a place where I can go in and look, and not say “hey, can you bring me out your size 14’s” and they come out with a pair of white high tops…

Mississippi Ave 2nd Thursday, The TeaZone, Kate Elliot

Headed out last night to check out the Mississippi Ave 2nd Thursday gatherings, which is basically shops open up and there is wine tasting, etc, and some bands playing outside. It wasn’t as big as I expected, but still cool, good to see another part of the city for sure.

After that, headed out the The TeaZone and Camellia Lounge in the Pearl District. Very laid back, and just nice. Kate Elliot was singing, she was good. No MySpace or website, so I can’t really link to anything, but yeah, it was good.

Finished off at the Kingston, which is near my apartment, always a good way to end a night out on the town.

Portland Differences #8 – No Mosquitos!

Minnesota is known for its “unofficial” state bird, the mosquito. One thing nice about Portland. No bugs!! It is so nice to walk around town, the woods, anywhere and not be bothered by mosquitos. People out here don’t even know what bug spray is. Wood ticks and deer ticks aren’t as much of an issue either. Just awesome!

Mt. Tabor – Portland, OR

Went up to Mt. Tabor Park this afternoon, walked around. I guess it is a dormant volcano, which is cool. Named after the real Mt. Tabor that is like 6 miles east. Pretty nice place. If I had an EVDO card, I probably would take my laptop up there for an afternoon.

Anyways, here are some pics:

Portland Blogger Dinner

Tonight I walked on down the block to the Portland Blogger Dinner at Jive Software. Pretty cool. Jive is nice, Wii, 360, beer on tap in the break room… the work on a product called ClearSpace – collaboration software written in Java.

It was a good get together, met some cool people. I added some pictures up on flickr as well

Some bigger bloggers where there, Jeremiah Owyang and Robert Scoble, and Josh Bancroft from Intel, all very nice people. Good times, can’t wait till the next one!

Of course, the topics of the night were Facebook, Twitter, and the iPhone…

Portland Differences #7 – Tater Tots (or is it Tator?)

One thing that I find totally different than Minnesota, is that in Portland, you can get Tater Tots on basically any menu at any bar or restaurant. These things remind me of like 3rd grade lunch hour, they are salty as hell, not good for you in the slightest, yet really good, with ketchup or ranch..

Are you gonna eat your tots?

Portland Differences #6 – Cool Street Names

One of my favorite things about Portland, is that the street names around where I live are named after Simpson’s characters! Matt Groening grew up in Portland, which is really cool to boot, but how cool is it to live on “Burnside” street, for Montgomery C. Burns 🙂

People probably think I am getting on the Simpsons Movie bandwagon here, since this is my 2nd Simpson’s related blog post in like a week, but I swear, I liked them before the movie 🙂 – Oh yeah, on a unrelated not, 7-11’s are turning into Kwik-E-Marts, but Portland isn’t one of the cities, WTF is up with that? Anyway’s –  Here are the street names and corresponding Simpsons character.

and there might be more, that I just don’t know of. But it is really cool to say, yeah lets go meet on this bar, down on Flanders. Ahh, Flanders. I always think of the little ditty, “Hens love roosters/Geese love ganders/Everyone else loves Ned Flanders.” and Homer chimes in “Not Me!” and then they say “Everyone who matters loves Ned Flanders” – hilarious! 🙂
