King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters

Thursday, I went and caught the last showing of “King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters”. What a hilarious movie. It is about basically, the Donkey Kong world record. This guy Billy Mitchell had it in 1982, and this guy is just a real character, like thinks he is the best player ever, just very cocky. Then this guy Steve Wiebe beats his record but there is all the controversy behind it, tons of video game nerds in the movie getting excited over high scores and things like that, just so funny…

It is funny because all of these guys are like in LOVE with Billy Mitchell, and they don’t want him to lose his record, but Steve Wiebe just keeps coming back, and finally they have to accept he is better..

some of the quotes are just great, especially from their little daughter

“Work is for people who can’t play video games”

“Some people ruin their lives to get in there” (talking about the Guinness Book of World Records)

and there are tons of other quotes from the other people in the film that just make you laugh. If you have a chance to see this movie, I recommend it!

311 and Matisyahu – Portland (Edgefield) OR – McMenamins

Last night we went to McMenamins in Edgefield for 311 featuring special guest Matisyahu. First off, 311 is my FAVORITE band! And they rocked. Matisyahu was OK, more background noise than anything, but he sounded good.

The real cool thing was the venue itself. Unlike in MN at the Xcel or Target center, this was a McMenamins, which is like all over Oregon, Portland especially. But it was outside, and McMenamins has food, beer, wine and all that. Just a really nice venue, places to sit and eat, etc. And then after the show, you can just go to one of the many bars/restaurants they have on their “campus” and chill, very cool.

Burnside: The Movie

As some of you might know, I live on W. Burnside St in Portland, OR

Yesterday I stumbled on a site promoting a movie of the name “Burnside”  http://www.myspace.com/burnsidemovie

I watched the trailers, it is shot in Portland, about the trials and tribulations of some people that roam on Burnside St. Pretty cool to have the street you walk up and down every day in a movie 🙂

Thing is, I don’t know where to find a showing of it, or watch the whole movie, which I would love to see it. If anyone knows or knows where to get a copy, let me know

Redo: New Gadget: Verizon EV-DO v740 Express Card

Well, after I posted yesterday, I got a comment from EVDOInfo.com about how the v640 wasn’t Rev-A, doh!

So today I walked down to the Verizon store and exchanged it. Yea the v740 cost a little more, but worth it. Yesterday I was getting between 300-700k (700 at most!). Here are the speeds on the v740:

Pretty sweet, thank you evdoinfo for the tip!

Oddball Shoe Company: Finally, I can buy shoes..

Went out today on a mission to pick up a new pair of kix, headed down 23rd Ave, hit some shops up, found a cool pair of Nike SB’s at Exit Real World

image

Which are cool, but I wanted something else more low key. The guy at the shop was like, “Check out Oddball’s”, ook, so I looked it up on my phone, and walked on down. Oddballs, yeah, I am an oddball I figured. Size 14. I get there, and the whole store is like bigger shoes, but cool shoes. They have video games, they have beer. Nice place. So I bought a pair of Van’s there too.

image

Finally a place where I can go in and look, and not say “hey, can you bring me out your size 14’s” and they come out with a pair of white high tops…

Mississippi Ave 2nd Thursday, The TeaZone, Kate Elliot

Headed out last night to check out the Mississippi Ave 2nd Thursday gatherings, which is basically shops open up and there is wine tasting, etc, and some bands playing outside. It wasn’t as big as I expected, but still cool, good to see another part of the city for sure.

After that, headed out the The TeaZone and Camellia Lounge in the Pearl District. Very laid back, and just nice. Kate Elliot was singing, she was good. No MySpace or website, so I can’t really link to anything, but yeah, it was good.

Finished off at the Kingston, which is near my apartment, always a good way to end a night out on the town.
