Happy St. Patrick's Day

St. Patty’s day, I’m not Irish, but I can drink like one 🙂

Not sure what I am doing tonight, but hopefully I will have some green beer. I just watched the Boondock Saints

“Everyone is Irish on St. Patty’s Day”

So, everyone go out tonight and celebrate the holiday that is all about green and drinking.

Trying New Theme – crystalx

Well, fiddled around with a new theme here at G-Allens on wifi with Dahlin today.

Here was my old theme:

steve.jpg

Things I DON’T like about the new theme:

  • The sidebar isn’t wide enough
  • I can’t seem to get the site description working in the top header, I can display it, but its jacked with the css and such
  • The widths are screwy, so a post that is wide will overflow into the sidebar

I don’t know, this is start, I will probably end up doing something different. Also, the rest of my site (music, etc) is still using the old wordpress theme css, so there is a little disconnect between the blog and rest of my site currently. I don’t want to update that until I am really satisfied with a theme.

Maybe Jen can make me a new one, since she doesn’t like the old one.

New Theme Coming Soon

Well, looks like I am getting publicly flogged for not having a “cool” theme, so it looks like I will have pull up the sleeves and show everyone my graphical talent and prowess. Be on the lookout for a new theme soon, hopefully this weekend. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Futuristic Alien Mouthwash

Got an email from ThinkGeek for a cool faucet attachment. It will make your water out of the spout blue or red depending on the temperature of the water. How cool is that?

I think I might get one, thing is, when the lights are off, I would want the water running all the time just so I could see the coolness 🙂

MyBlogLog and WhoLinked, and WordPress Themes.

I have read alot about MyBlogLog, so I signed up this morning. Pretty cool, I am liking it so far. Lets you see who visits, who clicks where, etc. Kind of like a suped up stat counter. Thing is, I signed up, logged out, and I can’t log in again, something must be wacked at the current time.

One other WordPress plugin I ran across is WhoLinked. I havent installed it yet, but I am thinking I am going to try it, looks pretty cool too.

I do need to do some widget organization on my sidebar, maybe this weekend is the time.

And since I got so much flack for my default WordPress theme, I might even change that up too – probably a good time to convert my whole site to an ASP.NET Web Application. When I made this site, all you could make were ASP.NET Web Sites in VS2005, so I was kind of stuck. I do have some music to put up to. We will see what this weekend brings, I am thinking either St. Patty’s day, or Geeking, haven’t decidied yet.

Jury Duty – Day 1

Man, Jury Duty. So, first off, I forgot to call in yesterday (you are supposed to call in every night after 5 PM to figure out if you need to come in). So, I called in this morning. 7:10. Be there by 7:30. Dang. Rush, rush, get down, park in the ramp, get to courthouse. I’m like the 10th person there, out of 30.

8:00, around 24 people there. Watch a little juror movie, and wait, wait, wait, for 3 hours, for the big call. Then we go through, they count us through every door, walk down below the street in the underground tunnels. Nothing like at the capital in D.C. or anything, more like something you and your buddy would do between your houses, well, no hanging light bulbs and boards over puddles, but nothing extravagant.

So we finally get to the court room. Oh yeah, nothing extravagant here either. Kind of looks like a set on a high school play, something they would come up with for a court room. The defendant looks like, well, homeless or your drug dealing uncle who hasnt bathed in like, 2 weeks. And his buddy in the seats isn’t much better.

Judge tells us, “Driving withouth a license”. Woah – huge offense. Dude, just pay the fine! Anyways, they choose 20 random jurors from the 24. I wasn’t picked. So, more waiting. One girl said she forgot she had an appt at noon, with her lawyer. Judge lets her go. 23 left. They attorney’s question the jurors: “Have you seen Oprah?” “Know any cops?” “Hate the DMV?” “Ever had anyting but a speeding ticket?” “Citizen of Stearns County?” (the last one was asked at least 4 times throughout the day)

So, they throw away 7 juror’s and are left with 12. Time for me to go. 12:30. 5 hours of my life waiting. I felt almost like I was on American Idol, waiting in the lobby with Ryan Seacrest (Seacrest….out!) – but I never got my big chance in front of the judges (literally in my case). Woah, that last sentance had like 2 or 3 puns. I’m on a roll….

No clue how the trial turned out. Im betting 99% guilty, oh well, another day, another…  .27 cents per mile and 20 dollars a day. Fun stuff!

C++ OutputDebugString()

I have programmed in many different languages, and as much as I can remember, one of the best things you can do is write debug ouput to an output window

VB 6.0 – Debug.Print “Debug Output”

.NET – System.Diagnostics.Debug.WriteLine(“Debug Output”);

and recently I have been doing some VC++ programming, and I didn’t know how to output to the output window, so I decided to figure that one out. Came across OutputDebugString();

Now I can stop throwing MessageBox’s all over the place when trying to debug something. What is cool to is that there are utlities that will read the messages from a debug output, like SysInternals Microsoft’s DebugView

One thing that is kind of weird, is that even if you build in Release mode, debug messages still come out. You could and probably should I am guessing wrap then OutputDebugString() in a DEBUG define, or even better IsDebuggerPresent()

Anyways, I’m glad to have taken 2 minutes out of my coding to find this instead of going along thinking there aren’t easier ways. 🙂

Skawed Off 12

Skawed Off 12   Well, way back in the day, around 9-10 years ago, up on the Iron Range in Chisholm, there was a dream. A dream for ska and punk. And who was there to answer the call , none other than “Skawed Off 12” , which was actually 10 players that got together over a couple summers and played their asses off.

I have been scanning in some old pics that I have in an album here, and ran across the old SO12 pictures. Regis Park Concert, Side Lake Parade, Hibbing Parade, St. Louis County Fair Concert. Man, those were the days. One of the best times was at Raskovich’s Grad Party, which sadly, I have no pictures (and a pretty hazy memory of too). Curtis Speiring’s grad party with 4 kegs wasn’t to shabby either. Can’t forget Magania’s Cabin party. How many times did the sherrif’s bust us?

What would be fun, but I doubt it would ever happen, would be a Skawed Off 12 reuinon, not even to jam, but maybe just Bimbo’s wings and beer, as we did many many times over the summer. It would be even better if we got together and jammed. I know some of us still play music, some are out of state, married, moved on to careers and “real life”, but for the summer of 98 we had a great time, the old van,  my garage, just having plain old fun. Practicing every day, at 5:30 till the cops came, and then hanging out even more. Practicing on Saturday’s when we had to play that night. Just awesome. And I can’t forget the first time we played, at the talent show, RBF and Limp Bizkit. Awesome! Me and Zales listening to LTJ and Mustard Plug, RBF , 1000 times and transposing it into Noteworthy Composer – I still think I have the sheets printed out somewhere in a closet. Fun stuff.

One can only hope to have as good of memories as I do of that summer. Hopefully one day we all reconnect and catch up on our lives since then. Maybe the old members will Google “Skawed Off 12” and find this post, actually that is one of my intentions. We used to have a geocities site waaay back in the day, but I think they shut it down for lack up updates (and probably because they got bought 5 times by different companies).

At least now I have some of the pictures backed up electronically, I will put them up on flickr eventually. I also have some mp3’s that we totally hacked of cable access (one of our shows was recorded) using a vcr and microphone. I should try to dig those out and get them up here too.

Great times.

Sick (Steve and Computer)

Sick Computer

Well, I guess I waited all winter to get sick. Stinks! Stuffy as heck, and coughing. Hopefully I get over it soon.

I also redid my work laptop last night as SQL and VS2005 seemed to be hosed. So I guess I get to finish up the straggling tasks on that today (Microsoft Update for one).

So it seems my computer and me got sick at the same time. Coincidence?

Well, at least the weather is nice 🙂
