Mississippi Ave 2nd Thursday, The TeaZone, Kate Elliot

Headed out last night to check out the Mississippi Ave 2nd Thursday gatherings, which is basically shops open up and there is wine tasting, etc, and some bands playing outside. It wasn’t as big as I expected, but still cool, good to see another part of the city for sure.

After that, headed out the The TeaZone and Camellia Lounge in the Pearl District. Very laid back, and just nice. Kate Elliot was singing, she was good. No MySpace or website, so I can’t really link to anything, but yeah, it was good.

Finished off at the Kingston, which is near my apartment, always a good way to end a night out on the town.

The Half Steps @ The Veranda – That's Amore

Last week, Heidi and I went to The Veranda Lounge at the Pioneer Place Theatre in St. Cloud. The Half Steps were singing. I pulled out the digital camera and recorded them singing “That’s Amore” (think: Dean Martin).

Bouncing Souls – Hopeless Romantic

A few years ago I was in a punk band for about 2-3 weeks, and this is one of the songs we learned, after we actually got everyone tuned to the same key.

Really not liking the vocals, should be an octave higher, I didn’t feel like screaming at 4:30 in my apartment though 🙂

Oh! Darlin!

Well, it has been over a week since I picked up my guitar, and I figured it was time to pull it out. Here is the result of that:

Figured too since I am growing the Paul McCartney beard out, I might as well try to sing like him. 🙂

Online Radio (Pandora) does make you buy music: The Generators

When I am not listening to my music collection, I usually listen to Pandora, using Open Pandora. Now, I know, no ad’s, how does Pandora make money? Well, I would gladly pay 30 bucks a year for this service, the Open Pandora app should be eaten up by Pandora.

Anyway’s, I kept hearing this song by “The Generators” – Roll Out The Red Carpet. And the lead singer sounds so much like Alkaline Trio, that I was like, yeah, this is good, so I went and bought it online, at Audio Lunchbox – 10 bucks, no DRM, mp3 format.

So, the theory that online radio doesn’t server its purpose is bunk, and that no DRM music is going to cause piracy is bunk, its just all bunk. It is just music. If people want it, they will get it. And I would rather buy it for cheap with no DRM than with DRM any day.

And with tomorrow being Online Radio Day of Silence, this is a fitting post, I suppose 🙂

New Video on YouTube – 311 Cover – I'll Be Here Awhile

Since everyone thinks I won’t be in Portland long, I figured I would respond the way they would on the Simpson’s, in song.

Jamming – Craigslist and Audio Cinema

As I mentioned in a previous post, I met up with some guys that I met through Craigslist on the musicians forums, and we jammed on Wednesday night.

We met up at Audio Cinema, in the an area full of warehouses on the SE side of Portland. At first I couldn’t find the place, it was like under a bridge and just like in a weird street, but finally found it.

We rented a jam room for 2 hours (15 and hour) which came with a PA already set up.

I brought my acoustic guitar and a mic, and there was 3 other guys, a electric guitar, a bass, and drums. We jammed out pretty good, played a couple covers to just get warmed up, then we just started playing different chord changes to see what we could come up with.

It was very laid back, no pressure, and a fun time. The other guys have wives and kids, so it isn’t like we will be rock stars or anything. We plan on getting together again in a week/2 weeks. Should be fun.

Oh yeah, hit up the Kingston which is like 3 blocks from my apt for some beer and nachos (don’t even get me started on nachos, its like the 20th time I have had them in 2 weeks!)

Open Mic Night – Cheerful Pit Stop

Last night, we headed to the Cheerful Pit Stop in Beaverton, Oregon for some food and it was open mic night. The backup band was 24/7.

I had my guitar, but no strap, but I sang a few songs. “What I Got” by Sublime, “Hound Dog” by Elvis, and “Red House” by Jimi Hendrix.

It was a fun time, the band members switch out, some real good guitar players, drummers, etc. Might just have to head back there next week 🙂

As you can see, having fun:

Open Mic Night

On that note, meeting up with 3 guys tonight to jam to see if we want to start something up, should be cool.

Open Pandora rocks

I have listened to Pandora here and there for a while, and it is ok, I just hate having a browser open, and I wanted to integrate my Last.FM profile info and put the song in MSN Windows Live Messenger. Pandora on the web just wasn’t doing it for me.

I heard about Open Pandora a while ago but never checked it out, but decided to the other day, wow – cool application.

I recommend that you check it out!
