Portland Differences #2 – Booze in Gas Stations

To continue on my last Portland Differences post about gas stations, there is another thing different about gas stations. Booze. Well, not booze, but wine and beer. And it ain’t 3.2%.

Every gas station, 7-Eleven, or whatever store, they have tons of beer and wine for sale, pretty much like a liquor store.

In Minnesota, you can buy booze in the gas station, but it is weak 3.2% beer, which if you don’t realize it, if you start drinking it, you don’t feel it. Like water.

So, no late night jaunts to the liquor store in Oregon, just run and get gas, let the guy fill it up for you while you go get a bottle of wine.

Portland Differences #1 – Getting Gas

In Portland, and I think in Oregon, it is illegal to pump your own gas. Here is a good article I found from the Seattle PI the does a good job of explaining it.

It really reminds me of being very young in Minnesota where all the gas stations had pump jockeys. You paid more for having them pump your gas and wash your windshield, or you could save a few cents and pump it yourself. Now, nearly all gas stations are self serve, except Oregon and New Jersey.

Just is odd when you go to get gas and they do it for you. I usually get out and just walk around and stretch my legs while I wait. Just one of the many differences between Oregon (and Portland) and Minnesota.

Pedalpalooza 2007 – The Naked Ride

Ok, so last night I didn’t do much, well, watched Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions. I think I have only seen them once, where the first Matrix I have seen like 1000 times. Around 12:10 AM, I start hearing screams and hollers and honking and craziness outside my window. I had the blinds closed, so I open them up, and what do I see?

700 people on bikes. Naked.

I would have taken a picture but I don’t want my blog to be XXX rated, so just imagine it.

What it is, is Pedalpalooza. Well, the naked ride is just part of the week long event. Pretty crazy though, the people were coming by for like 45 minutes to an hour, just screaming.

From the FAQ: Isn’t this illegal? The city of Portland wishes it was. See The Law.

One week in Portland and I am already seeing crazy things, who woulda thought? Maybe I would have joined them, if my bike wouldn’t have gotten jacked like 4 years ago from my garage (well, I probably still wouldn’t join them, maybe though :))

PGE: Portland General Electric – Online

Today I set up my electricity at my apt. Well, one thing that was different than the past was that I did it all online. Instead of calling and waiting for 30 minutes on hold and giving out all my info, I filled it in online and submitted a start request. Pretty easy and convenient. Being new to Portland, and coming from Minnesota, this is the first time dealing with anyone but Xcel Energy. Portland General Electric seems pretty cool, and they sponsor the local baseball field (PGE Park – but I suppose, Xcel has the Xcel Energy Center :))

PGE Park

Overall – a good experience.

New Apartment

First post from my new apartment. I am tethered off my T-Mobile Dash right now. Still moving in. Sucks, have to park like 1-2 blocks away and carry stuff, but I am getting there, piano and some smaller things left.

The apartment itself is bigger than I thought, it has like a dining area, living area, bedroom, bathroom and kitchen. It isn’t the most glamorous place, but I expected that, the location is really good though, tons of things within a few blocks. One thing about Portland, they don’t have screens in the windows 🙂

I am right above the coffee shop (Wired on Burnside) – man, yeah bagels smell good 🙂

I will post up some pics later after I get more situated

In Portland

Last night around 8:30 PST I made it into Portland, so the Journey is over. 1630 or so miles, 1 night layover.

Left on Thursday at 1:15 PM CST, drove from Sartell, MN to Miles City, MT – arrived around 9:30 PM MST.

Left Miles City, MT on Friday at around 6:30 AM MST and drove, drove, drove.

Not to many debacles, which is good. One time driving down the mountains, had to stop quick and a box or two got shifted. In Missoula, some stoner walking around invited me to stay in town and go see the “hot babes” on main street.

One thing I noticed, which is funny, at the gas stations, instead of asking if you want a bag for any groceries, they ask if you want a sack. WTF? 🙂

Right now I am crashing at Emily’s studio until I can get into my apt, later next week. She is working right now, so today I will be bumming around Portland. I am impressed, I found her place with no map, just bumbling around.

Still getting adjusted to the time difference, right now it is 5:52 AM 🙂

Here are some pics from along the way :

On the road again…just can't wait to get on the road again..

At work right now, last day. Played a few games of pong, just talking to everyone, saying goodbyes and what not. Going to hit up lunch with Jeff and then hit the trail out to Oregon, should be a good trip.

Moving – Hitting the Oregon Trail!

Well, a lot of people already know, I am moving to Portland, Oregon. I am heading out west starting May 31st. My apartment here in Sartell is sub leased out, I have an apt lined up out in Portland, and my employer is going to keep me on as a contractor. I will probably give some more info on things as it gets a little closer, but for now, all I can say is that I am very excited. It is a new chapter for me, and basically like an adventure. I guess that is what life is all about.

Going on vacation out there in April was basically to check it out to see if I would like it, and yes, I did! What a great place, tons of cool things, and just the way things are laid out as far as the ocean, mountains, trees, landscape in general – just seems like a great place to be, and I can’t wait to be there.

I blogged a few weeks back about selling stuff I have, which I have been doing. I am just going to take anything I can fit into my car. Right now I don’t have much left to get rid of, so in the next week and a half, it should all be gone.

Dude!, I’m getting a Dell! – Since I am going to be contracting, I figured it would be good to get a laptop, so I bought one the other day on dell.com, should be here next week! – Pretty excited about that.

I have been in the Central MN area (St. Cloud, Waite Park, Sartell, Richmond) for almost 10 years now. I moved down here from Chisholm after high school in 1998, to go to SCSU for Comp SCSI and run track and cross country. Things have changed dramatically since then. I feel as though it is time to move on. I am pretty excited!

Last but not least, Emily is out in Portland! I can’t wait to see her again! 🙂

Here is an artist’s rendition of what my trip will look like on the way out:

If you don’t know, that is from the classic video game – Oregon Trail. Hopefully I won’t die from dysentery 🙂

I am going to be sad going, missing my friends and being farther away from family, but I just think this is a good move, I feel “right” out there. I am doing many things that many people have told me that they wished they could have done, or missed the opportunity to do. I am going to be living right in the hustle and bustle of the city, but I will also be 20 minutes from the wilderness. With my guitar and my laptop, I should be fine. I am really excited!!!

I am guessing their might be a going away party yet to be scheduled, if there is, I will post up the details, and I am sure the after party pics, up here.
