Skype

I installed Skype tonight. I have known about Skype since it first came out, but decided to hold off on the install until I was sure it was solid, or had a use for it. If you dont kow what Skype is, it lets you make free internet calls to other skype users, or you can put some cash in an account and call anyone on a regular phone for like 2 cents a minute..

My skype id is ScaleOvenStove

Microsoft Timezone

Cool little app that sits in the systray, and allows you to set Timezone’s up so you can click and see times anywhere, and allows you to easily switch between timezones on your pc. Since I am in Detroit for the next few days (Eastern Time), I installed it and use it. Pretty cool.

Microsoft Voice Command 1.5 Released

Yesterday, I installed Microsoft Voice Command 1.5 (5 Day Trial). This is some cool software. I loaded it on my Audiovox 6601, and started using it.

“What is my battery level?” I say, and it responds: “The battery level is 79%”
“What is my signal stength?” I say, and it responds: “The signal strength is 100%”

You can open applications, call people, view contact, start media playing, etc, etc. My only wish is that it would do more! This is the future of computing, in my opinion. If you have a pocket PC or a Windows Mobile device, you should check it out.

MSN Desktop Search

My thoughts on the MSN Desktop Search.

When the Google desktop search came out, I installed it, and let it index my machine. I use Google for my web searching, so when I saw that it integrated with those results I thought it was cool.

The MSN Desktop search has other things though that make me use it now instead of the Google desktop search.

1) Deskbar – as you type, results show up – this is cool

2) Integrated in “Explorer” and Outlook – easy to find

3) Seems faster

4) More options

the couple things that stink are

1) MSN Web Search results aren’t as good as Google’s in my opinion. It would be nice to be able to specify what web search to use.

2) MSN Search should replace the Start->Search functionality in XP if you install it. The XP Search is worthless.

Overall, I would rather run a Microsoft Product (running google desktop search is like putting Chevy parts in a Ford)

MSN Music Service Beta

I started using the MSN Music Service tonight, just to see how it compares to Napster. Pretty cool. I bought one album, The Hives new one. The only thing I see that sucks is that you cant re-sync downloads if your computer crashes. It says you are responsible to back them up. What a PITA. They do allow you to have the music on 5 computers though (Napster is 3)

Check it out!

VMWare

VMware is a product that lets you create “virtual machines”. I used it at training to run RedHat on top of Windows XP. It worked like a champ. Today, I set up Windows 2003 Server in a virtual machine and was playing around with it. Very cool. If you haven’t checked out this product, you should download the 30 day trial and mess around with it.

Winamp Turns Five

Wow, just surfing around, and I see that Winamp 5 is out. It has been our for a couple months, but damn, I remember when it was like winamp 1.2, winamp .08 beta. It sure has come a long way, it used to be the bomb, when all there was to play mp3 was “winplay” (and wow did it suck). I converted to Microsoft’s Windows Media Player a couple years ago, because I like the library management better, and the auto id3 tag updates, etc. I think I was in a phase where I was trying to get as much as I could on my PC without installing any 3rd party appz.

Anyway, winamp turned 5, which is cool, it is still a stellar app, just not totally what I am looking for. Actually, I installed WMP 10 Beta the other day, and I think it is really cool, more integration with Napster (even though I don’t use it that much).

After a little more investigation, Winamp skipped from version 3 to 5, and the also are charging 15 bux for the “pro” version, that allows you to burn cd’s, etc.

For now, I think I will stick with WMP 😉
