PHP, IIS7, Vista, VS2005

Tonight, just for the heck of it, I decided to get PHP running on my machine. I am running Vista (not SP1 beta). I already have IIS installed, so that pre-req was taken care of.

First thing, I made sure I had everything turned on..

Start->Run->Programs and Features->Turn Windows Features on or off…

image

I made sure CGI and ISAPI was checked. I then downloaded and installed PHP (http://www.php.net/get/php-5.2.5-win32-installer.msi/from/a/mirror)

When I went through the install, I changed the path from Program Files to Windows (read online that it would be better – rights – if in Program Files it doesn’t have the same rights as in Windows)

Then, I opened IIS7, and  went to “Handler Mappings” and clicked “Add Script Map”

image

It will prompt you when you hit ok to add to CGI stuff, hit Yes.

Then you can make a test PHP page in your wwwroot, put <?php  phpInfo();  ?> in there and it should work!

Now, as an added bonus, I wanted to use VS2005 IDE to develop PHP scripts, and found VS.PHP (http://www.jcxsoftware.com/vs.php) which lets you make PHP projects in VS2005. There is a 30 day trial, but then it is 99 dollars. I installed it and tried it , pretty awesome.

I don’t know how much PHP programming I will do, but every now and then it is nice to dabble into other technologies and code up something, or just keep up on the latest trends.

Windows Vista and netsh – How to connect to adhoc networks if you IT dept locks you down…

Ok, so for some reason you can’t play with adhoc networks, maybe your IT dept locked you down, maybe something else happened, some security software or something jacked your settings. Well, you can use netsh to allow adhoc access again. Maybe you don’t even want to connect to ad-hoc, but you want to run one, same difference.. anyways, just run this cmd:

netsh wlan delete filter permission=denyall networktype=”adhoc”

and you should be good to go!

Vista, IIS7, Classic ASP, and Microsoft Access – How to Get It Working!

First, make sure ASP Classic Is Installed on Vista, good instructions here

Make sure your app is set up as a virtual directory, etc, etc.

Then, you need to set permissions and run commands and change around settings just to get anywhere. Just for kicks I made the IUSR for the directory have modify rights, but I am not sure if that did anything, oh well, I am not changing it back.

I ran the default page, and got this

An error occurred on the server when processing the URL. Please contact the system administrator

Nice huh? Well, I went and turned off Friendly HTTP Errors in IE Internet Options, that didn’t give me anymore info, so, found this:

cscript %systemdrive%inetpubadminiscriptsadsutil.vbs set w3svc/AspScriptErrorSentToBrowser true

That will send the actual errors to the browser, ok good.

Now, getting this:

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error ‘80004005’

Found out you need to run 3 more commands to get this to work… ok

icacls %windir%serviceprofilesnetworkserviceAppDataLocalTemp /grant Users:(CI)(S,WD,AD,X)

icacls %windir%serviceprofilesnetworkserviceAppDataLocalTemp /grant “CREATOR OWNER”:(OI)(CI)(IO)(F)

And

%windir%system32inetsrvappcmd set config -section:applicationPools /[name=’DefaultAppPool’].processModel.loadUserProfile:false

After all that nonsense, the page/app actually worked! What a debacle…

How the f*#k! do I hibernate in Windows Vista??

Ok, so today was at Starbucks, and wanted to move on down the road, so I wanted to hibernate. To no avail, no option to hibernate my laptop in the shutdown area. Just sleep, shutdown, restart.

After 10 minutes of F’n around, I figured it out. Turn off “Allow Hybrid Sleep” in the advanced power settings in the power settings in control panel. Wow – that’s exactly where I would expect to turn it on!

Start->Control Panel. In the search I typed “hib” and an option to “Turn hibernation on or off” under Power Options comes up. Click on that. Then there is a link “Change advanced power settings”, click on that. Dig through the settings until you find the “Allow Hybrid Sleep” under the Sleep option.

hybrid_sleep

Nothing like making an option to actually turn on or off hibernation…man.

Vista – Hide Ad-Hoc Networks

Since I am getting my Internet today, this probably isn’t such a big deal, but for the past few days I have been “borrowing” the coffee shop’s wifi below my apt. Comes on in the morning, shuts off at night. But, there are like 20 wifi points in the list to connect to. I hate ad-hoc networks, they just seem shady.

So, if you want to hide them from the list:

netsh wlan add filter permission=denyall networktype=adhoc

To reverse this again run the following:

netsh wlan del filter permission=denyall networktype=adhoc

SQL Server 2005 – Reporting Services – Windows Vista

I just got my new laptop, and I am installing Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005. Ran into a snag, that took me a little bit to find the answer.

First, SQL Server 2005 setup is just ghetto. There are two setups, “server” and “tools” and sometimes it just doesn’t work right. Anyways, only SQL Server 2005 with SP2 is supported on Vista. You would think that there would be a slipstream download with the RTM and SP2? Nope. Not that I could find at least.

Other thing I found. By default, you cannot install Reporting Services (SSRS). Reporting Services depends on IIS to run the report web server. Even though I had IIS installed on Vista, it still wasn’t finding it. Searching Google for “SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services Vista” didn’t really give me much luck (easily).

Eventually I found this KB article http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/920201

Basically you need to turn more things on in IIS. I turned pretty much everything on but classic ASP and CGI, reinstalled SQL 2005 and no warnings – great! 🙂

So, I go to connect to my instance, and no AdventureWorks DB. I installed everything I thought? WTF? Well, I found this article on reinstalling AdventureWorks sample OLTP and DW databases

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143758.aspx

Because you know, once you install SP2 on SQL Server 2005, you can’t really run the RTM setup without it complaining, and then, it says you already have a newer version installed – bah!

So, in the end, SQL Server 2005 with all the fixings is doable on Vista. Just make sure you have IIS configured correctly!

Vista Bug – Filename to Long

So, tonight I was cleaning up my hard drive, and windows.old folder from the Vista upgrade was sitting there, 25 GB. So I decide to delete, and it removes everything but one file. The file won’t delete because it says the path is too long. I cant rename it or move it because the path is too long. I had to open cmd prompt and CD to that directory and delete the file using the command line. What a debacle 🙂

Windows Media Center – Vista

I have just started to play with Windows Media Center on Vista, first off, because it found my 360 and wanted to set up the extender, so I just did that. The music interface is much better than the WMC on XP. I will have to route my TV into my computer so I can play with that as well. I know in the past I have read some reviews on WMC on beta versions of Vista, and they weren’t so good, but I am really liking it so far.

Itunes Doesnt Work On Vista

Well, last week I read all over the web, that the Zune didn’t work on Vista. Well, the Zune just came out last week, but Ipods have been around for years, and guess what. Itunes doesn’t work on Vista!!! Well, it runs. It tries. But it croaks – hardcore. First, it doesn’t support Aero (Glass) – second, I try to do a search for anything, and wham, it dies. I can’t sync my Ipod!! I guess I can always install MediaMonkey again. Thing that irks me the most is, I like WMP. I griped recently about WMP11, but I like it better than Itunes. Why can’t Microsoft/Apple/3rd Party make my Ipod sync with WMP. WTF? Why make it harder for consumers to use your products. I hate Itunes, always will, unless they make it better than WMP. Anyways, thats my gripe for the night, and I guess my Ipod will have to be happy with old music on it 🙂
