It's Beginning to Look Alot Like..

Fall.

No snow yet – what a bummer. One week into December and it seems like fall. This Saturday it was like 50 degrees out. Hopefully by the end of the month we will have a little snow. I can’t wait to whip some donuts in my truck.

Computers in Movies

I am a big movie fan, but what I always end up doing is watching for what types of computers they use. For example, I saw “National Treasure” this weekend. All they used was HP – EVERYTHING. Monitors, laptops, etc. They must have had a deal with HP or partnership. Then I watched “Swordfish” on dvd = they use Dell, and the “Italian Job” – all Dell. I think in “Swordfish” they had Dell, but they were running some weird or old version of IE, or like IE in kiosk mode. It is always fun to see what movie makers do with technology, and if they get it right. Like in “Swordfish”, they talk about getting a DS3 connection to the house. 28 T1’s ! Woah, alot of bandwidth. There are also some movies who try to come up with like their own OS and interface, those are fun to. Like if you are a hacker you see this magical mystery land in your computer. Wouldn’t that be cool to see in real life? Like you are on some acid trip in your computer and everything is 3D. Maybe one day, but until then, you can still watch for computer products in movies because the more technological people get, the more common they will be in productions.

Fined For Blogging

Mark Cuban, the owner of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks, was fined for blogging about the hosting of the opening night on the same day as the election. I am surprised that Scoble hasn’t piped up about this at all. Cuban is a multi-millionaire and CEO, Big Shot kinda guy, and his blog is cool. It’s too bad the NBA can’t handle any criticism.

TV

TV Is a ripoff IMHO. You pay for service every month, but yet you still have to sit through commercials. WTF is up with that? I like HBO and other pay extra channels – no commercials. That is the way the rest of TV should be. Now I hear that TiVo is putting up ads when you fast forward through commercials. Don’t these companies listen to their customers? The reason they are FF through commercials is not to see ads, duh!

I think TV should be set up so you can just pick and choose channels you want to watch, and pay by the minute or something, like .002 cents a minute. Or pay by the half hour. So like I could say I want channels 40, 60, 11, and 32 on certain hours, and I just pay for that.

Think about it – regular AM/FM radio – you don’t pay for it, so there are commercials, and I can understand that. XM radio on the other hand, you pay for, so there are no commercials. TV should be set up this way.

The other thing that would really be cool with TV is if you could pause it, and then get information on the web or something on every single item on the screen, no matter what it was. Like if there was metadata on every item. The clothes the people wear, clocks, cars, places, carpets, song playing, etc. Everything! What a trip that would be. The metadata database would be HUGE! But this would be so cool!! Why doesn’t Microsoft of some company with a butt ton of money come up with this?

2000 MB Under the Sea

Whoohoo! Finally! Hotmail has made good on their promise and up’d my email storage from 25 MB to 2000 MB (2 Gigabytes). I went from using like 76% to using 1%. Nice!

Here is the proof:

SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services

Today I took part in installing SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services. One quirky thing. I had the default website stopped. I had another website running on port 80. Reporting Services wouldn’t install. I couldn’t run both websites on the same port (it was internal, no DNS set to have subdomains). I had to start up the default website on port 8080, and then Reporting Services installed. I then stopped the default website, but to my surprise, the virtual directories for Reporting Services were under my second website running on port 80. WTF are they checking for? My guess is a website that has a default directory for c:inetpubwwwroot – Everything else on my second website was the same as the default except for that. It would be nice if they let you choose where you wanted to put the website, like if you already had a website running on IIS, just to choose which website you want the virtual directories installed.

weird!~

Firefox Upgrades and Extensions

I use firefox for all my internet browsing, and I really like it, except one thing. 80% of the extensions that I have loaded all break everytime I upgrade to the next version, and I have to go and re-download them and install them again, and set up and settings they have. What a PITA. You think that extension developers would get a delta document or something so they could have the extensions ready to go when the next release of the browser comes out. It would also be nice for firefox to tell me what extensions will break before I install the newest version.

Adblock is about the only one that always works. Tabbrowser pref’s always breaks which makes browsing alot harder for a week or two after upgrades. The tabbrowser extension allows you to open everything in a new tab. When it breaks, everything opens up in a new window, so you end up having 8 browsers open, like when you surf with IE.

Smile :)

This morning I watched a documentary on “Smile”, the long unfinished album by Brian Wilson. It shows how he came to create it and how it got scrapped because it was taking to long, the band members didn’t like it, etc. Whenever I start listening to the Beach Boys again, I want to play piano and record music, and be in a band again. The harmonies and melodies that Brian Wilson comes up with are just a trip.

Wilson finally “completed” Smile, but he didn’t use any of the original recordings. Him and his traveling band re-recorded all the tracks. It sounds good and is just weird! It really is a masterpiece, like the Pet Sounds album.

Isn't It Ironic?

… ” 52 percent, say they believe the United States has found clear evidence in Iraq that Saddam was working closely with the al-Qaida terrorist organization. ”

Wow, that is really close to the number that voted for Bush…hmmmmm…..

Too bad there is no proof to back up any kind of link whatsoever. If there was a link between Iraq and al-Qaida, I would gladly stand behind any action we take. But from what I can see, the administration cannot prove anything. First it was a tie to 9/11, then WMD, then Liberating the Iraqi people. That is like…You have won the lottery – no wait – you just found 20 bux in your laundry – no no, not that, you just found a half a penny cut up on the ground. Pretty soon the reason will be that we just needed to make sure our equipment still works. Give me a break! A war with an unjust reason should not be a war.
