MSN Music Service Beta

I started using the MSN Music Service tonight, just to see how it compares to Napster. Pretty cool. I bought one album, The Hives new one. The only thing I see that sucks is that you cant re-sync downloads if your computer crashes. It says you are responsible to back them up. What a PITA. They do allow you to have the music on 5 computers though (Napster is 3)

Check it out!

The White, Black, Grey Album

Lately I have been listening to “The Grey Album”, and “The Double Black Album”. They are both remixes of Jay-Z’s Black Album. The Grey Album is a mix with the Beatles White Album, and the Double Black Album is a mix with Metallica’s Black Album. Both of them are half way decent. Check them out if you haven’t yet.

Are ISP's just stupid??

Are Internet Service Providers dumb? Why when end users call in for tech support on their connection, the first thing they get told is to “turn off your firewall”. Are you kidding me? Most users don’t have a hardware router or firewall to block all the bad stuff, just software firewalls, and when an ISP tells them to turn it off, they will get hacked in 10 minutes. ISP tech support is just lazy. Instead of troubleshooting and fixing someone’s internet connection (which is their job) they tell them to turn off their firewalls. It is like this: I have a problem getting my car started, so I call a local shop, and they tell me to unlock and open all my doors, and then it will work. Well maybe it will work, but everything will get stolen out of my car (I know that isn’t the best analogy, but it sort of works).

I have had three people call me and tell me that this is what the ISP told them to do. Two from Astound and one from Charter. WTF are these ISP’s thinking?? It just makes me mad when people take the lazy route.

END USERS: IF YOUR ISP TELLS YOU TO TURN OFF YOUR FIREWALL OR ANTIVIRUS – TELL THEM THAT YOU RATHER PUT YOUR WALLET AND BELONGINGS OUT IN YOUR YARD FOR SOME PASSERBY TO JUST WALK BY AND TAKE.

I can’t stress this enough. DO NOT TURN OFF YOUR FIREWALL!!!!!!!

XP SP2 Flaws

I have been watching the tech news the last week or so, and there is a big todo about these new XP SP2 Flaws found. I watched and watched, waiting for someone to retaliate, and I finally found the rebuttal I was looking for. The bottom line is, if a user runs a program, that is their choice. The OS can’t stop that. The person should have anti-virus running to see that. They should also only run things from trusted sources. If you goto hacker warez land and start downloading exe’s, and running them, what do you expect? If you play with fire, you are eventually going to get burned. One other thing is people should believe everything they read on the web. If I put a link to an exe on here, you should make sure it doesn’t have viruses, if it tries to connect to the web, ask me why, etc.

Consolidation….

I have been watching the blog of Scoble and I noticed he is having issues with comments and speed. I think that he could maybe fix it by consolidating. I know it is a PITA to do, but maybe just scrap all the stuff you have at like 10 different blog sites and start anew. Reformat his “blogweb”. For example: “I have a radio blog that has comments on daves blog which looks up this on userland that get some info from typepad, that gets read by technorati that loops back to my radio blog. Then I have 10,000 people subscribed to my blog that has 5 levels of recursion, and I even subscribe to the comments section, which adds 2 more layers of recursion. Dammit I wonder why it is so slow?”

Minimalize, Consolidate, Standardize, Unbloat..etc, etc

Wow…so I finally broke down and joined the world beer tour at Old Chicago. 110 beers. I need 107 to finish. I had two regulars, and then some Belgian beer. 750 ML of beer! Are you kidding me? It was good though. Now that I have my World Beer Tour card, I will never leave home without it.
