Mustard Plug?

Ok ok ok, what is Mustard Plug?

Evildoers Beware An awesome ska/punk band from Michigan. I can rarely find anyone who knows of them. I have all their albums and they just rock!I first heard of them back when I was in SO12. Zales and I spent hours trying to get their song “You” down on paper so the band could play it. To this day, that song is still one of my faves.

I have yet to see them live, hopefully one day. One cool trivia fact. Their album “Pray for Mojo”, the title comes from the Simpsons. Krusty’s monkey is named Mojo, and he types stuff on the keyboard, well he gets boozed and drugged up, and all he can type on the keyboard is “Pray for Mojo” – hilarious!

Whew, Category Update

So I went through all 400+ and some posts and categorized them a little better, into a smaller list.

It is funny because I always catch hell from Aaron about how I should have two blogs. It looks like my posts are split 50/50

In the process of organizing my categories, I ran across a nice Ajaxy plugin for the “Manage Posts” screen in WordPress called WP-Cats. It really cut down on the time spent categorizing, I would recommend this to anyone who wants to recategorize their posts.

Category and Tag Crazy

Well, I did some cleanup tonight. I deleted all my categories. I had way too many, like 400. And it was goofing up some things. I will probably find some auto technorati tag generator instead of using categories. I will probably try to limit my categories to 10 to 15 at most. The list was huge!! Took me a while to get it cleaned up. In the process, I was trying to find some plugins to do the dirty work, found a few that didn’t seem to work exactly how I wanted. One thing, I couldn’t find a single plugin to “delete all categories”. Weird.

Rule #1 of blogging – tag/categorize your posts!! And now my blog is totally uncategorized. Probably totally screwed my search engine status on things, but oh well, life goes on, and I couldn’t stand the huge list of categories I had going on.

BTW, I changed my theme again, some reason my new one got jacked , the sidebar was messed, and I kind of like this new theme.

BTW2, I am writing this from Windows Live Writer. I had a post up previously, but thought that was the culprit of the sidebar jackedupness so I deleted it (rule #2 of blogging, don’t delete posts :)) – Anyways, I deleted another post from a while ago I didn’t with Word 2007, since the timestamp was 1969, and I couldn’t change it for some reason, and since my dad was a few years out of high school in 1969, I don’t think I would be blogging that year…well, maybe if was born I would have been 🙂

More WordPress tips: Get rid of blog spam!

I set up WordPress a couple of years ago, moving my blog over from blogger.com. After a while, I started getting tremendous amounts of blog spam. For the longest time, I’d come home after work and delete 100’s of blog spam.

Finally, I decided to find a solution. Akismet.

Akismet is a WordPress plugin that pretty much eliminates the blog spam problem. You need to goto WordPress.com and sign up and get a Developer API Key, but that is about it.

Install the plugin and away you go.

I always love logging into my dashboard and seeing the stats:

Akismet has protected your site from 58034 spam comments

Backing up your WordPress Blog Database From WordPress

If you have ever wanted to back up your wordpress blog database from within wordpress, well look no further.

Here is a blog post on the plugin you need, and instructions.

Pretty simple. Download the plugin, unzip, upload the php file to your blog, active plugin, goto Manage->Backup and you are good to go. I feel more comfortable already. This is especially handy if your blog is hosted on a hosting company server.

When Is and Idea more than a Idea?

When it makes sense. Everyone has ideas. Everyone has the way they think it should be, but there are many factors
that can contribute to how an idea come become more than an idea.
Does it make sense?

Feasible? (financially and resource wise)

Does it fit our goals?

Is there more to it that we aren’t seeing?

Is there an easier way?

What are we going to gain?

How long will it take?

Does anyone else agree?

Do you actually know what you are talking about?
I could probably keep going for another 100 questions. This series of question applies to everything you do
where someone has an idea. Your job is the thing most people thing of, but it applies to more: You and your friends
going out on a Friday night, you and your bandmates writing songs, just apply it to pretty much any situation.

You should try to make sure you “pre-qualify” your idea, so, #1, you don’t look like a total goof when you
bring it up, but then also when you get asked follow up questions, you know what you are talking about.

If you think you won’t know what you are talking about when someone tries to poke holes in your idea,
then it probably means you need to do some more research, or probably that your idea isn’t very good
in the first place.

Many people have ideas, but then have no follow up on how to follow through with them. Usually
that is where ideas that are bogus will get filtered out. Once you get other people to buy
into your idea and they actually thing its a viable thing to do, then it is easier to
get things pushed into an “action”

Sometimes too, your idea might be good, and in some given situations, if you can, just do it,
and if you are sure that it is a winner, and then it turns out to be, apoligize later. 🙂

T-Mobile Dash $49.99 For Developers

Found this from a blog yesterday, you can get a T-Mobile Dash smartphone for $49.99 from here

“Select “Save on the latest devices from T-Mobile” in the next page select “Click Here for Discounts” then “View Products” and last “Handhelds and PDAs”

The $49.99 is only for new activations, does not include activation fee, and only requires a one year commitment, which is pretty good. The better news is that you will be able to upgrade it to Windows Mobile 6 via a sofwtare download soon.”

I already signed up for one, hopeully I get it by the end of the week. It never hurts to try something new.

Amazon Unbox

So last night I decided to try Amazon Unbox Movie downloads. I read about it over at Fransen’s blog, where is using the Tivo feature. I tried “A Scanner Darkly“.

What is cool is, I use my Xbox 360 as a Media Center Extender (I’m running Vista Ultimate). The Unbox video (even though DRM’d) played through the extender. Pretty sweet, exactly what I wanted. The one downer is it won’t play until fully downloaded, whereas if you use the unbox client on the pc, you can start playing it like 2 minutes after it starts downloading. They have a web load feature where you can order a movie or TV show from a remote pc and your PC at home will start downloading it, so it can be ready when you get home. That will probably be the next thing I try.

Still looking for the ultimate combination where I dont have to buy cable service, but still can get all the media I want and watch it on my TV. The quest continues, but for sure Amazon Unbox is another tool added to the belt.

Windows Media Player 11 – Video Support

I really like Windows Media Player for the music library features, organizing, rating, etc. In Vista, the Photo Gallery takes care of pictures well, and videos too (tagging) – gotta love it, the photo gallery handles the videos. But the Video organization in Windows Media Player is, lacking.

When you are in music, you can organize by Album, Artist, Genre, etc. Video just has Actor. I have like 250 music videos, and organizing them becomes a pain. One other thing that is just missing in my opinon is, video preview when you are in the library view. With a song, you don’t need this obivously, you just listen. But a video, you can’t see it unless you goto the “Now Playing” tab. So you end up switch back and forth just to organize, quite a headache.

Maybe as I use it more, I will uncover an easier way to organize all my media, photos, music and videos. A “de-duping” feature for music would be great. That is one thing Itunes has that WMP is lacking.
With 80+ gb of music, organizing becomes a part time job 🙂
