Weekend Fun (with Pictures!)

Well, after getting my ride out to Portland all cleaned and oiled up, I went over to a buddies house, we drank beer, talked, and just soaked up the sun. Was a really nice day, as you can see from the clouds here 🙂

Cool Clouds

After I met up with some friends, which ended abruptly, but then I met up with Heidi downtown, we hit the HOP, the Pioneer Place, DB’s and then Erberts and Gerberts 🙂 – that was fun too, really the first time since I can remember that I was the one getting taken care of.

Me and Heidi

She crashed at my place and we then cruised up to Pierz to her and Emily’s parents, which was cool. Picked up some stuff to bring out the Portland, had some good eggs 🙂 and then we walked around the pasture, to check out the new dock.

The River

After we walked back to the house I got the full tour of the dairy barn and the rest of the buildings. Really was cool, reminds me so much of my Grandpa Ed’s farm up north. Also reminded me of working at the fairgrounds. I learned some things that I had no prior knowledge on, which is always cool. One thing that many people don’t know about me is that there was a time when I wanted to be a farmer, thought it would be so cool. Someday I might just have to get some land 🙂

Overall, an exciting and fun weekend!

Moving – Hitting the Oregon Trail!

Well, a lot of people already know, I am moving to Portland, Oregon. I am heading out west starting May 31st. My apartment here in Sartell is sub leased out, I have an apt lined up out in Portland, and my employer is going to keep me on as a contractor. I will probably give some more info on things as it gets a little closer, but for now, all I can say is that I am very excited. It is a new chapter for me, and basically like an adventure. I guess that is what life is all about.

Going on vacation out there in April was basically to check it out to see if I would like it, and yes, I did! What a great place, tons of cool things, and just the way things are laid out as far as the ocean, mountains, trees, landscape in general – just seems like a great place to be, and I can’t wait to be there.

I blogged a few weeks back about selling stuff I have, which I have been doing. I am just going to take anything I can fit into my car. Right now I don’t have much left to get rid of, so in the next week and a half, it should all be gone.

Dude!, I’m getting a Dell! – Since I am going to be contracting, I figured it would be good to get a laptop, so I bought one the other day on dell.com, should be here next week! – Pretty excited about that.

I have been in the Central MN area (St. Cloud, Waite Park, Sartell, Richmond) for almost 10 years now. I moved down here from Chisholm after high school in 1998, to go to SCSU for Comp SCSI and run track and cross country. Things have changed dramatically since then. I feel as though it is time to move on. I am pretty excited!

Last but not least, Emily is out in Portland! I can’t wait to see her again! 🙂

Here is an artist’s rendition of what my trip will look like on the way out:

If you don’t know, that is from the classic video game – Oregon Trail. Hopefully I won’t die from dysentery 🙂

I am going to be sad going, missing my friends and being farther away from family, but I just think this is a good move, I feel “right” out there. I am doing many things that many people have told me that they wished they could have done, or missed the opportunity to do. I am going to be living right in the hustle and bustle of the city, but I will also be 20 minutes from the wilderness. With my guitar and my laptop, I should be fine. I am really excited!!!

I am guessing their might be a going away party yet to be scheduled, if there is, I will post up the details, and I am sure the after party pics, up here.

I Don't Want To Play In Your Yard…

A few weeks ago, I watched the movie Reds. What a great movie, it just came out on DVD, but it was released in 1981 I think.

Anyways, in the movie, there is a repeating song, “I Don’t Want To Play In Your Yard” that they keep playing/singing. So I did some digging, found a crappy version from 1895 in the Internet archives.

I listened to that and then recorded it. Not the whole song, but just the main line. Catchy tune. It sounds weird, because it is a kids song, but, I still like it.

One part in the song says “sliding down our cellar door”. Cool because “cellar door” is considered by some to be the most beautiful phrase in the English language.

Here is my version: I Don’t Want To Play In Your Yard

4 Wheeling

How do you sell/get rid your stuff?

This weekend I started spring cleaning, minimizing. You can see I started with getting rid of cable. Instead of running a second Windows 2003 server, I am going to get a USB enclosure for the 80 GB hard drive and use that. I have a lot of things that I don’t use, don’t need, or just could get rid of.

#1 – My PSP – won it, used it, but don’t use it enough

#2 – My PS2 – played all the games, over it, time to get rid of it

#2.5 – PS2 Games – 32 games – taking up space.

#3 – My Beer Fridge – don’t need it 🙂

#4 – My Bass guitar and small amp – again, don’t use enough, don’t really need it

#5 – My Electric Guitar and Big Amp – don’t use it. They are old, if I want to get a new one, I will, and it won’t be a ghetto one.

#6 – Portable DVD player – don’t really use it anymore, and I have a DVD player here (Xbox 360 – what can’t it do?)

#7 – Ipod – well gave it to someone who will use it.

#8 – DVD’s – I have Netflix, easy enough to get them, or Unbox, or other online movie services. No use having the DVD’s . I will keep a few classics (Matrix, Goonies, Big Lebowski) of course.

#9 – Books – I had a bookshelf full of books that I have lugged around for 5 years. Well, the Library has them now, Magazines too (MSDN, Xbox, Nintendo Power)

#9.5 – Bookshelf – no more books – don’t need a bookshelf anymore 🙂

#10 – Clothes – A lot of clothes I don’t wear or won’t wear – going to Goodwill.

#11 – Junk – tons of junk and pack rat stuff, throwing it out.

#12 – Baseball cards – I have some baseball cards. I want to sell, need to figure it out, it really is a hassle.

#13 – 27 inch TV – I have two TV’s, the old tube and the new LCD I won this year. Time to consolidate.

I also have a ton of other stuff, old Nintendo NES parts if anyone wants (controllers, joystick, games, etc)

There are probably 1000 more things I could list, just to clean up stuff and get organized.

So out of the list, I have things on EBay, Amazon.com, Craigslist. Add that with donating, and throwing, you can really clean up your stuff. It starts to feel good when things are just what you need and you don’t have stuff all over the place taking up space, and you just end up hauling it around every time you move.

In my experience, I have found Amazon to be the best for media (DVD’s, Games) – although I will probably bring most of my games to a local store, and DVD’s too, its a hassle to mail them out.

EBay, for bigger electronics, but I have recently found Craigslist to work too. Still on the fence with this.

If anyone is interested in anything above, let me know, I will give you a deal, that is if its not already gone! 🙂

Cutting the Cable

This morning I cut the cable. I called up Charter and disconnected my cable TV. I have researched into all the different ways to get media/TV shows etc online and I have found that it just isn’t worth it to have cable TV anymore. I can watch the shows I really like to watch online, or at worst, buy them for $1.99 an episode, or if I am really desperate, download the torrents.

Basically all you need in your house is a good Internet connection and you can do anything. That coupled with Netflix and you are good to go. I can use Amazon Unbox, Itunes, Xbox Video Marketplace, Bittorrent, Fox.com, Abc.com, NBC.com, CBS.com. Basically there is one show I cannot miss – that is 24. The others, Law and Order’s and 1 or 2 others, I don’t mind if I see or not, it is just background noise usually when I am doing other things.

Do you think you could take the plunge and cut your cable?

T-Mobile Dash + GPS + Mologogo = Debacle

I have my cool new T-Mobile dash, and my Pharos Bluetooth GPS, but I just want more.

Currently I can see where I am on the phone using Windows Live Search Maps,  but I just want more.

I want to be able to post up my coordinates every minute or so, save them or map them or what have you.

Mologogo seems to be the answer to that, but there are always issues. First off, the site can’t seem to stay up for more than 10 minutes at a time. I did some digging and found the IP address, so I added that to my host file

216.127.82.54 www.mologogo.com

Second, the SmartPhone version seems buggy, not feature complete like the other versions, etc. There doesn’t seem to be a place to set up a remote URL feature so I can post up the coordinates to my own server, which is really what I want to do.

Also, I am looking into GPS.Net again. I will play with the trial, #1 because the final version is 250 bucks, and previously I could never get it to work right. Maybe if I get something going I will just use that and forget mologogo.

Hopefully I can get something going here this weekend, I want to be able to track my coordinates as well as take a picture, upload to flickr or some URL and save it with the waypoint. Then I want to create .kml files for Google Earth so I can track where I have been, and photo tag them. Tall order for this weekend , but we will see. I will be on vacation in Seattle/Portland starting middle of next week and I want to track my vacation, like where I go, etc. We will see 🙂

Piano Playing – MusicNotes and Video Game Music

I bought a piano back in October, and I am really liking it. I probably don’t play as much as I should be, but I try. Its actually easier for me to play guitar than piano – I can get through more songs without screwing up 🙂

Anyways, even when I was in piano lessons, I really wasn’t into playing classical music and all that, I was more into rock n roll, The Beatles, John Lennon, things like that.

I know I have blogged before about music you buy, that it is the lyrics in the treble clef, which I hate. Like you can listen to a song, and hear them play one thing, and they sing the lyrics, but in the sheet music, the try to incorporate all that into the piano part – I hate that!!

Even so, I still buy some sheet music, and now, I just do it online, and print it off. The site I primarily use is MusicNotes.com – it seems to have the best selection and price. I know Schmitt Music has an online store, I haven’t heard the best things though.

With MusicNotes, you can get music, listen to it before you buy, print off the first sheet before you buy. You can even transpose it before you print, which is exactly what I did yesterday. I have a recording of John Lennon playing “Real Love” on the piano, just him. If you don’t know the song, The Beatles put it out on their Second Anthology in the 90’s – its really the last “new” Beatles song ever. Well, when the Beatles recorded it, the jumped the key up “The song has been sped up 12% from the demo” – so, the default key on the music was too high (it matched the Beatles but not Lennon’s version), so I transposed it down to the right key. And I have been playing it the last day, but yet, I am not playing the music. Looking at the chords, taking bits and pieces, and trying get rid of the damn lyrics in the treble clef notes!!

Where else does a piano playing geek look for music? Video games of course! A while back I found a site with a ton of music from video games. Super Mario Bros. is the ultimate piece, most everyone knows it. There is the Overworld, Underworld, and Underwater themes. I can play Underworld and Underwater themes fairly well, I might even try to record Underwater. The Overworld is a bit tougher.  One of my best memories of growing up was playing “The Goonies II” on NES. I remember playing with my cousins and sister. That game, in my opinion, was one of the best. Music was great, just fun game to play. I found the music for that as well! Great stuff, tough though. Fast and crazy. I lost the original link to the site where I got the music, so I will just post up some copies here, they are zip files, containing a midi of the song, and a PDF of the music. I have more than these 4 and maybe I will post them all up on a sub site of my website.
