Mac OSX 10.5 Leopard – Enable Root Access

Ok, maybe I am a real newb on Mac OSX, but I didn’t know this one. Took me some fooling around in the OS to get it working. A little background. I am getting into some iPhone development. I want to dig into the Native app dev, and using SDK.

Using the Native app stuff, I wanted to make some directories in /usr/local/ , but was getting permission denied errors.. ok.., its UNIX, lets SU… but what is the root password? hmmm..

Figured this out.. go to Application->Utilities->Directory Utility

Once that is open, go to the Edit menu, Enable Root User. You can then set a password up.

Now back in terminal, run “su” and you can put in the root password you just set up, now you have rights!

iPhone: Firmware 1.1.4 – Mobile Safari – Login/Password won't save – Cookie Permission Issue

When I first picked up my iPhone, I unlocked/jailbroke using SSH (yikes!), and then after a few firmware updates and revirginzings, there were tools. I have been using Independence (on my Mac) lately, and then getting Installer.app on there over SSH, and then unlocking, etc from there.

With 1.1.4 I decided to try the new kid on the block, Ziphone. It worked, flashed, activated, jailbroke, unlocked. Now with the new Pwnage Tool that was released today, I will probably use that from now on, but looking back to the first firmware OTB to now, I have probably used 5 different methods, all resulting in the same thing, and unlocked iPhone.

Now, I after putting 1.1.4 on, I noticed my cookies weren’t working. Or in other words, logins/passwords weren’t saving in Mobile Safari. Basically, I had to put in my Facebook, Google Reader, etc login/password every time I hit the site – which really sucks.

My first guess is.. Cookie folder can’t be written to for some reason. I did some research, and yes, people with 1.1.4 unlocked or not are having this issue. Seems like a random issue with 1.1.4 on all iPhones.

Well, you can wait for the next firmware from Apple, try downgrading back to 1.1.3 (no way!) or , just fix it yourself.

What you need to do is either set the owner on the Cookies folders to “mobile” instead of “root”,

chown mobile /var/mobile/Library/Cookies/
chown mobile /var/mobile/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist

or you need to allow write/modify access to the Cookies to all users.

chmod 777 /var/mobile/Library/Cookies
chmod 666 /var/mobile/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist

What I did was change the owner to “mobile”. Your phone must be jailbroken, and have SSH installed. You can use Putty to SSH to your phone and do the fix. Here is the screencast:

You can tell that it works if you the go to a site, like Facebook, login, then in the Cookies directory on your phone, do a

ls -lat

you can see the last modified time and it should be updated to the time you just logged into your site.

Headache… resolved!

iPhone and Windows 2008

The iPhone doesn’t do anything with Windows 2008 by default. Usually when you plug it in, it will charge it, and it will show up as a digital camera in your My Computer. Windows 2008 , it just sits there, fails driver install, and does nothing.

If you install iTunes (ugh) , then at least you can charge your iPhone in Windows 2008, still the camera doesn’t work. I wonder if the Desktop Experience add on needs to be installed in Windows, not sure yet. For now though, at least it will charge 🙂

iPhone: Google Maps Continuously Crashes

Found this out this weekend, my Google Maps was continuously crashing. I was at the hotel, and the wi-fi for the hotel had the screen where it asks you to accept the ToS, or whatever. I never accepted, but was trying Google Maps on my phone, and it kept crashing. I just had to turn off wi-fi and it worked fine again.

iPhone: 1.1.3 Firmware and YouTube "You must first connect to iTunes with an Internet connection to enable Youtube"

So, after I upgraded to 1.1.3 Firmware on my iPhone, I tested everything. Everything works as planned, even my voicemail works great (not visual VM, but when I hit VM when on a diff carrier it actually goes to my VM!)

But, one issue I saw: "You must first connect to iTunes with an Internet connection to enable Youtube" when I tried to use YouTube

To fix: go to Installer.App, add a source "i.unlock.no" , let it refresh, then install the YouTube Activation Fix. Restart your iPhone and it works! Brilliant!

iPhone Hacking: Updating my 1.1.1 Unlocked iPhone to 1.1.2, then 1.1.3 (Activate, Jailbreak, Unlock, oh my!)

I tried this http://cre.ations.net/blog/post/the-113-soft-upgrade-jailbreak-faq but for whatever reason it thinks my phone isn’t 1.1.1 and jailbroken, so I had to find another way.

found this: http://modmyifone.com/wiki/index.php/OsX113devjailbreak

but I am 1.1.1, so need to update to 1.1.2, so I followed this tutorial http://modmyifone.com/wiki/index.php/Getting_Started_iPhone_Modding_OS_X_current_3

Worked great .. well wait, at the end my phone was stuck in restore mode. Doh. What to do? Well, try to restore 1.1.2 again I suppose, probably going down debacle road here.. we will see..well I decided to restore back 1.1.1 (http://modmyifone.com/wiki/index.php/Getting_Started_iPhone_Modding_OS_X_current) first, then go back to 1.1.2 again..

Unlocked 1.1.1 again using the same method I did before (the prefs, but did the jailbreakme.com stuff)

I restored to 1.1.2 then, and it was at emergency screen. I decided to use independence 1.1.3 beta to active/jailbreak 1.1.2 for me, so now I am there, not unlocked yet. I need to get Installer.app on there manually here (http://rapidshare.com/files/87105691/Installer.zip.html)

I then decided to unlock using AnySim 1.2.1u before trying 1.1.3 (maybe just so I could check my text messages in between upgrades? :)) Didn’t work. Forgot to turn on airplane mode. Restored back 1.1.1, then to 1.1.2, but this time I used independence to get it out of restore mode at the end (the tutorial above doesn’t say that – so the first time I did it, I figured I messed up or something! Doh!)

Now, lets unlock this baby using AnySim 1.2.1u (http://modmyifone.com/wiki/index.php/Unlock_the_iPhone_1.1.2_Upgrade) – remembering airplane mode!!!

Ok that worked, now I am on 1.1.2, unlocked, jailbroken, ready to go to 1.1.3..(http://www.modmyifone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27648)

After it running for an hour, then a black screen for a while, I decided to reboot, and BOOM 1.1.3! I love the web clips, I put Facebook, Google Reader and Meebo on the home screen, as well as installed the Contacts Icon app through installer.app (since I am running 1.1.3, jailbroken, and unlocked (T-Mobile))

Whew..I am sure I missed some thing in between here, but I kind of "live blogged" it 🙂

The Google Maps locate map feature doesn’t work by default (known issue when upgrading/unlocking) So I am installing Navizon to try that, I guess it fixes Google Maps (http://repo.navizon.com to sources in Installer.app)

iPhone Commercial Incorrect?

Just recently going back to the dark side, and getting cable again, I have noticed some new iPhone commercials on TV. There is one where they talk about kind of going on vacation, and show you all the things you can do with the iPhone to aide in planning, etc. If you watch closely, you will see the date is August 6th (a Monday) and the time is like 1:25 PM. But when they click on the stocks icon, it updates the stocks, but the at the bottom it says “markets closed” – hmm…

I’m not 100% sure either but then the phone rings, but it isn’t a ringtone that comes on the phone by default – weird. I looked for a couple minutes on YouTube/Google but couldn’t find the commercial to put up here or watch again, oh well 🙂

iPhone: Firmware 1.0.2 Unlocked->Revirginized->Upgraded to Firmware 1.1.1 – Unlocked!!

So this weekend I decided to try to get my 1.0.2 FW iPhone to 1.1.1 FW, and unlock it again. Well, Since I unlocked it with the iUnlock method (before it was a GUI app), I knew my baseband was hosed, so I needed to revirginize it.

I followed this method. Your mileage may vary, but it worked for me. I think tried following other tutorials to upgrade, downgrade, upgrade, activate, unlock. I tried multiple methods, and even combined some methods to try to get it all to work. I got pretty far a few times, but missed something or something was screwed up here or there where it didn’t work.

Basically, once you have a “virgin” phone on 1.0.2, this is what I did, (there might be other methods, but this is what I did)

1) bonehead – RESTORED to 1.1.1. Doh! – don’t do this

2) once I was on 1.1.1 I was screwed, so I had to downgrade to 1.0.2 FW (with the update modem still from 1.1.1)

3) UPDATED to 1.1.1

4) Activated, Unlocked

Now that is the simple steps, there are about 1000 different ways to do most of everything. But in the end, I tried independence on my Mac after I was on 1.1.1 locked, and it activated, unlocked, installed apps, etc. So that was my final solution!

Some cool tricks learned…

If your phone is at the “activate now” screen, you can slide to emergency dial, dial *#307# and hit dial, it will call itself. Hit answer, and then hold button. It will call itself again. Decline, and you are on the contacts screen. Add a new contact, any name will do, as the URL for the homepage, put prefs://1F save contact, open url, and you end up getting to the settings screen, you can set up wifi, change settings, etc. Pretty crazy hack.

Some things with 1.1.1 – Installer.app works, SummerBoard works (the new version) – SSH, etc works, but most of the other apps I cant get to work, they just open and close. My guess is they are either not working with 1.1.1 or I need to enable execute on the directories on the phone, oh well, for another day.

I should have documented everything I did, but I didn’t I have a pretty good idea about everything so if you really have a problem you can give me a comment or email and I will give you some advice. Your best bet is to troll the forums, or other places. I have some links I could share as well, but I am not going to post them as some of them contradict each other. You basically just have to take the best stuff out of each one and combine. Not sure if you can get it working on Windows yet, with some luck I am sure..

iPhone: SummerBoard won't install after updating to AppTapp version 3 (firmware 1.0.2)

Dang, so in my previous post I said the audio wouldn’t work. Mickey and I figured that it was a 3rd party app causing the issue, so I uninstalled everything but the installer and sources. I uninstalled SummerBoard, etc.

Well, after I solved the audio issue, I wanted to re-install. Thing is, my Installer.app (AppTapp) was updated to the latest version today, v3.0b3 , ok cool. But now SummerBoard wouldn’t install! It says you need Firmware 1.1.1. Woah, big time suckage. AppTapp should read your firmware version and then supply you with the version of an app that supports your firmware.

How do you get around this:

Download the .pxl for an older version of SummerBoard here

you need iBrickr installed, hook up your iPhone and then install manually, and it works! Neat.

iPhone: I can't hear anything!

So today my iPhone started going wacky. Couldn’t hear anything when I called or got called and no sounds were coming out, iPod, keyboard clicks, etc. WTF? The headphones worked, the speakerphone worked, just regular calling didn’t work. It would ring when called, and then yes, it dawned on me..it must think the headphones are still plugged in! (The phone still rings when headphones are plugged in).

How to fix this DUMB issue:

1) put headphones in

2) pull out reaaaaaly slow, or really fast.

I tested by starting a track in the iPod, and then pulled out my headphones fast, it started playing.

yeeeeeessssss!
