An Update about Jobs, Games and Phones, Car Radios, Oh, and Who Moved My Cheese?

Just an update and some rambling. I haven’t blogged much lately because, well the blog material is in low quantity. Why? Because I just changed jobs! Previously I was a Independent Contractor (for W3i) and now I am a consultant with a new company (Stratagem) here in Madison. As always when you wind down a job you are leaving, there isn’t much “work”, more training in people or just finishing up things. Also, in the new role, I just started today, so once things get rolling there the wheels in my head will be going again.

In other news? I picked up GTA IV and Guitar Hero III for Xbox 360. I am liking them both so far. If you want to play, hit me up, my gamertag is ScaleOvenStove.

Also, I had to bite the bullet and actually subscribe to at&t. I probably didn’t have to, but I have been reading reports and blogs of people in Madison getting their T-Mobile shut off. Why? Well T-Mobile doesn’t cover Madison. Einstein PCS and at&t cover Madison (for GSM coverage). Now, with T-Mobile, my main market was the St. Cloud MN market, and I had a St. Cloud npa-nxx (read: area code and first 3 digits). My plan was nationwide roaming, so basically as long as I was on T-Mobile, it was ok. Even when I was in PDX, it was probably OK since I was on T-Mobile’s towers.

Now, in Madison, there are NO T-Mobile towers. So that means I was constantly roaming on at&t (oh the irony) or Einstein PCS. T-Mobile probably has some program on their backend that looks for patterns like this (constant roaming in a different market) and they then shut you down because you are costing them way to much money and really you aren’t in your correct market.

Next step? Register with at&t – but I had to get a new number as well. Why? You can change your number – but only within the same markets. WLNP stands for Wireless LOCAL Number Portability. The “local” part is key 🙂 – so since I had a St. Cloud number there is no way I could port it over. I still have both numbers, and once the 3G iPhone comes out, I will get that, give my original iPhone to Emily and then change my T-Mobile St. Cloud number to a pre-paid T-mobile account.

Whew, what a debacle huh? 🙂

What else? I want a new car radio for my Vibe. Thing is, I cannot find the one that I want. I want everything 🙂 Bluetooth, USB, Aux, GPS, Double Dinn, etc, etc. Just not out there. And Best Buy, Circuit City, and even Local shops (Radio Doctor), just seem … well, lacking. You go in and half the spots where radios are supposed to be are empty, or they don’t work, it just seems very amateurish, maybe its just me.

So, for now, my feet are rooted in MSN (that has to be the worst airport code – since it is the same as Microsoft’s MSN).

Facebook Ads – Relevant and Ready

Yesterday, Emily decided to pull a April Fools joke – that we are engaged on Facebook, to scare her mom, friends (and me , hehe)

Well one second after I confirmed it, the ad in the Facebook sidebar changed..usually it was about coding or video games, and now?

Minnesota Smoking Ban Loophole: Theatrical Performances

Last weekend, I was up in Chisholm, Minnesota for my Grandfather’s 80th birthday. After the party, we headed downtown Chisholm to check out my step sisters boyfriend play in his band, at Sabin’s bar.

Now, Minnesota passed a smoking ban (Freedom to Breathe Act) in bars and restaurants in October 2007. This means NO SMOKING. Well, they have found some loopholes in the law, that says to some effect “actors and actresses are allowed to smoke while performing, like in a play”. Well, bars are starting to take this loophole and use it, as Sabin’s did that night, and there were many people smoking in the bar.

I happen to see the “Playbill” on the bar, and snapped a photo (which I retyped below as it might be hard to read)

Smoking Ban Loophole

*****PLAYBILL*****

The Tobacco Monologues

Live at Sabin’s Bar!

TODAY

A Theatrical Performance and Satire Regarding the Minnesota Legislature and the Freedom to Breathe Act

Note: There will be some smoking during the performance.

Friends, tonight YOU get to participate in the first of many amateur theater nights at Sabin’s bar. You will get a chance to perform in our play. The bar is the stage. If you want to be a part of the play tonight see one of the bartenders. They are in charge of the casting call. If you make the cut you will be given a sticker to wear which identifies you as one of the performers. As a performer you will be allowed to smoke. That’s right smoke indoors! You are already on state, and in the play. Have fun!!!

Special thanks to our friends Mark Benjamin & Sheila Kromer

***************************

What a joke. First off, I was pissed because there was smoking. I hate smoking, I hate smoking in the bar. I hate coming home smelling like smoke, my clothes, hair and whatever. I hate having to breathe it, and feel like I am about to gag. It is good there is a smoking ban, there is no reason smokers should be able to smoke indoors and pollute the air everyone has to breathe. They can go outside. Plain and simple.

The next day in the Duluth News Tribune, I read a bar in Babbitt MN got cited for doing a Theater Night. Good! But they got fined $300. WTF? They could just collect 2 dollars from every smoker and pay the fine every night. They need to get fined $10,000, or be shut down for a night, to feel the pain.

I am not sure, but I hope Sabin’s gets busted too. Loophole or not. It looks like they are going to start busting more bars for this. Leave your opinions in the comments.

What Have I Been Up To? Windows 2008, Drive Backups, VS2008 Web Programming, SSIS Stuff

I have been pretty busy lately. I have some posts that I want to write up, but it seems they are getting bigger and bigger, longer. More stuff 🙂

Just a highlight, this weekend I decided to do a full drive backup and create a restore cd, I followed this process. http://www.darkchip.com/DriveImageXML/Complete%20System%20Recovery%20Process.html

I just didn’t stumble upon that. I did some research on drive backups, etc and found Drive Image XML. From there I did a backup to USB. But then I needed a way to restore, so I followed the BartPE tutorial for Drive Image XML and got that all set up. Just gives you a sense of confidence, knowing you have a full backup. Why did I decide to do this? Because I wanted to try Windows 2008 Server on my laptop, as a workstation, so next I did that.

Installed Windows 2008, set it all up. I am liking it, but there are some caveats so far. Wifi is off by default, you need to install some extra stuff. Turn on audio services, etc.

IE is totally locked down, but I installed Firefox right away anyways. Windows Live Writer won’t install, but yea you can get it to work – you need to get the MSI – http://on10.net/blogs/sarahintampa/20879/Default.aspx

The OS doesn’t find the iPhone, so I will have to figure that out. I haven’t installed the "Desktop Experience" yet, I want to try not installing it for as long as I can. Win2k8 flys with everything turned off by default.

Also have been working on some side projects, web site and other blogs/projects. Getting deep into VS2008 and .NET 3.5, which is fun. Ran into some debacles with the ProfileBase auto generation stuff, probably another post.

Also, so cool stuff in SSIS that I probably could write up, we will see.

I am all over the board right now, I know, but it is fun, doing Programming, Database, Web 2.0 blog stuff, System Admin, the whole gamut. I love it.

2007 – The Year Without McDonalds

In December 2006 I decided to not eat fast food (mainly McDonalds) anymore. The last time I had McDonalds was December 26th 2006 – I had breakfast with my stepsister Mel in Hibbing. I went all of 2007 without Mickey D’s and I would have to say that I am happy. I don’t really miss it. Sometimes I crave some chicken nuggets, but overall I am good. As far as other fast food, I did go to Burger King around 3-4 times early 2007 – Jan/Feb time frame, but since then I haven’t hit anything like that, Taco Bell, Arby’s, etc. Although I will have to admit sometimes it is hard to find a place to grab a bite, say if you are traveling, on the side of the road, that IS NOT fast food.

On a side note, in late September I heard October was Vegetarian Month, so I decided to try not to eat meat for all of October, and, believe it or not, I did it, and no, I did not die.

The year without fast food added in with walking around PDX like crazy, plus running (oh yeah, I started that again in PDX – for another post), I did lose some pounds, which is always a good thing..

Now just to not drink as much beer, give up wings and pizza and I will be really good… 🙂

MacBook Battery X Problem

The other day I turned on my MacBook (thanks Reena! – still waiting for the “real” power charger…) and noticed the battery had a black X in it. I had it plugged in, it wasn’t charging. I unplugged it, and the MacBook shut down. Dang.

I unseated the battery, put it back in, and plugged it in, tried again. Same thing.

I did some digging on Apple’s site..

I tried Resetting MacBook and MacBook Pro System Management Controller (SMC) .   That didn’t work. They talk about battery update 1.2 (which I already had) was supposed to fix this problem, so that wouldn’t be the issue.

I then found another link, http://www.apple.com/support/macbook_macbookpro/batteryupdate/

Looks like the jackpot. Free battery replacement outside of warranty for this issue. Looks like I am heading to the Apple store in the West Towne Mall, to see if they actually go for it. I am going to print off the page and see.

Update: I went to the apple store, and signed up for the genius bar. They had a wait, the guy was like ” why don’t you sit through the iPhone getting started training. Ok I said, what a joke..  But as far as the battery, I got a new one for free. She was like “let it drain once a month” – which is what caused the problem in the first place, ugh

Relationships and Geeks

Saw a post this morning on Geeks are Sexy, about “Why Geeks Shouldn’t Change For Anybody”, which has a clip from Diggnation (which, I would love to do a show like this, just need someone to do it with).. anyways..

Watch the video:

They are spot on. This is exactly right, and it is funny, because it does happen. I am going to be playing video games when you leave, and yes, when you come back I will be playing the same video game. Why? Because that is what we do. We are normal. Geeks are going to take over the world, they already are, so people should get used to it. 🙂
