Ok, so the last two days, the weather has been somewhat agreeable, like, above 0. What I don’t get is, you look at the forecast and it says “High of 13”, but the temp outside is like, 20 already. You would think they would go adjust the forecast and say, “High of 20” or maybe even higher than that. Thing is, looking at the forecast where they high is already beaten out by mother nature, the forecast is worthless π
What do you do when your house is on fire? You throw more gas on it and point a flamethrower at it of course!
Flipping through the TV guide from my digital box the other day, and this dawned on me. The TV Remote Control design is backwards. Huh? Well, so if you are looking through the guide, you actually have to hit the “down” button or “page down” button to make the channels go higher in the guide. To me this is just wacky. Hit down to go up. Now, you can look at it, and say, yeah, hit down and it makes the things on the screen go down, but the channels go higher. Another quirk – there is no back button on my remote, but to get back from some screens, you have to hit the last button, which is no where in the vicinity of the rest of the menu controls. And “last” really means two things – last channel or last screen? I don’t know WTF they control designers were smoking, but I suppose – after a few months of using it I’m sure I’ll be used to it π
Learned a lesson this week. Measure Twice, Cut Once. I guess I’m not really measuring, or cutting, but it relates. Reminds me of a story. Back in high school, when I was around 17, I had a 55 Plymouth Savoy I was restoring. My Grandpa said I could use the lean-to on his garage as my place to fix it up. It was cool in the summer/fall, but once it started getting colder, we were freezing. A buddy of mine was working on it with me every day, so we decidied to put some insulation in the lean-to and some plywood up on the walls. We insulated everything, and then we needed to put the plywood up. Thing is, we needed to cut the plywood down a little. We measured, and it was something like 73 and 1/4 inches. We went and my grandpa was ready to cut, and said 71 and 3/4 – and we were like – no no, 73 and 1/4. We argued but didnt want to push the issue, so we cut it at 71 and 3/4. We goto put up the plywood, and there is a big gap at the top. All hell breaks loose, and we are scrambling to get something shim it up, etc, etc.
We should have measured twice.
Now, the example above isn’t a huge deal, we lost a few sheets of plywood. But just think if we needed to put up thousands of sheets, and we cut them all before checking – we would have been big time screwed. Moral of the story – before doing something that you might have second doubts on – double check it, then double check it again – otherwise would could be wasting alot of time later. Measure Twice, Cut Once π
This is great – Law Students Turn Backs on Gonzales
By the way, the I think the original quote of Ben Franklin is: “Those who would sacrifice essential liberties for a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.” How true that is. We are heading down a slippery slope, and most citizens don’t even realize it.
I bought the whole Planet of the Apes series on DVD – and one Saturday, I watched them all the way through (6 DVD’s!) Anyways – the story gets goofed up if you really thing about it:
The story starts with astronauts in a spaceship, showing earth time as 1973, and ship time as 3955, because of time warps, and speed of light travel, etc (physics, worm holes).
When Taylor (Charlton Heston) crashed in 3955 (The Planet of the Apes), he was first introduced to the apes, and humans were dumb. He meets Zira and Cornelius, and they befriend him. Taylor realizes that the planet he is actually on is Earth, in the future.
Then, in “Beneath the Planet of the Apes”, Brent came looking for Taylor, still 3955
They were both there and saw the war happen, and they end up blowing up the Earth totally.
In “Escape from Planet of the Apes”, Zira, Cornelius, and Dr. Milo, come back to 1973 time on earth, following the trajectory Taylor took the first time.(First off, would it be like the year 5955 and there would be no Earth left because Taylor blew it up?) but anyways, the kicker is that only way Zira and Cornelius could EVER come back to 1973 earth was because Taylor and Brent came to 3955 earth (and crashed their ride, giving Zira and friends a way back)
OK, in the first movies, they talk about a lawgiver that told them of an ape that knew how to talk and rose up to be king of the apes. This is even more wierd because in the 4th movie, the apes are pets/slaves of humans because of a virus that killed all the cats and dogs (they tell us in the movie that Zira and the other apes brought the virus from 3955 back to 1973).
Zira has a son, Milo (Ceaser), and 20 years later Milo revolts, leading the pet/slave apes.
In “Battle for the Planet of the Apes”, Ceaser and some humans defeat all the bad humans; the year is now around 2003. The lawgiver is present in the beginning as a storyteller so the year there is probably around 2050 or 2060, but this really doesn’t matter.
The main point is,
If Taylor would have never went to 3955 earth, Zira would have never brought a virus to kill all the cats and dogs, making apes pets, later to revolt, and she would have never been able to give birth in 1973 earth time. Therefore Milo (Ceaser) could never revolt and then apes would have never taken over the earth.
But say if Taylor would have landed 20 years later, after Milo was already born in 3955 time, which would have been around 3975, then Milo couldn’t revolt in 1991, because he would never have been there.
ItΓβs all an infinite loop, with each event dependent on the other with a lot of unanswered questions. I watched them all in series, all in a row, so it was easier to understand.
It sort of reminded me of 12 monkeys in a way, but ill let you think about it…
I received an email from Microsoft, one of their daily or weekly “Microsoft News” emails. One good link that I saw was “7 rules for using laptops in meetings” By Jeff Wuorio. It really makes sense
