Family Tech Support Lifesaver – TeamViewer

Earlier this week I read about TeamViewer on Lifehacker. I figured, yeah, just another gimmick, like GotoMyPC, whatever. So I just made a mental note and moved on.

If you ever have had to deal with long distance friends and family and their computers, you know what I am talking about. People don’t know what they are doing when it comes to setting things up, and since you aren’t there, they try to get you to help over the phone or IM, and it ends up being a debacle.

Steve Tech Support

Microsoft tried to add remote support in XP and Vista, but it just doesn’t work! Remote Assistance is what I am talking about. Every time someone tries to request “Remote Assistance” from me, I can never connect, it always ends up being back and forth trying to get connected, and not solving the person’s problems.

So, today my mom was like “I just bought a new printer, hooked it up to the desktop in the basement, but I want to use it on my laptop, shared , you know”

Well, trying to talk a relative through windows networking is basically like trying to talk Spanish to someone in China. (“Chinaman is not the preferred nomenclature dude” [Walter from The Big Lebowski])

Anyways, I’m like, ok, good test for this new “TeamViewer”. I install it quick, on my desktop at home, Vista, no issues. Mom – install it. Give me the “Partner ID” and “Password”, in 2 seconds, I am connected. And remember now, this laptop she is on has 1 or more firewalls running, which is what is causing the problems in the first place with the printer sharing. I connected to her with no issues. So I poke around, get the computer name and just check it out. Good. “Mom – go install TeamViewer on the desktop, give me the info so I can connect”. I go play a song on the piano, before I am done, she IM’s me back the info, and I connect. No issues.

So now I have 2 remote’s up. I first disable Windows Firewall on both, try to ping each by name. The laptop can get to the desktop, the desktop cannot get to the laptop. Go back to laptop, dig around. Trend Micro running as well. Tried adding a subnet rule so it trusts the internal network. No Dice, not intuitive and I’m not spending all afternoon on this. Disable the firewall. Try pinging both again by name. Works. Add a printer, search the “workgroup” (I verified earlier they were the same). Find printer, add it, print test page. Done.

Tell mom – “you don’t need a firewall (or two) because you are behind a router”

Close TeamViewer, all is well.

I would recommend to anyone who needs to connect to someone remote this new TeamViewer app. Works great, and saved me time 🙂

Go here to get TeamViewer: http://www.teamviewer.com/index.aspx

Bird's Eye on Me

Check out my apt from a “bird’s eye” point of view

Online mapping has come a long way in a short time. Google Maps was taking the cake for a while, then it was ask.com maps (at least for the Central MN area), well now, Live Virtual Earth is really #1 at this point. With Bird’s Eye and also the 3D option you can install, its almost like Google Earth’s desktop client.

If you are going to clean in the 21st century…

Then you better use the technology. This weekend I cleaned the apt, spring cleaning if you will.

Bagless Vacuum (or even better, a robotic vacuum)

Automatic Shower Cleaner

Disposable Toilet Cleaners

Swiffer

Bleach Tablets

Crazy Dishwasher Tablets

Windex (not the plain ol Windex, scented of course)

Rosie

Well, kidding on the Rosie part, but I wish! Thing is, with all the cool stuff out there you can clean your pad easily, half the time you just set stuff up and go, no cleaning really involved. Still waiting for the home of the future from back in the 50’s though… 🙂

Mustard Plug?

Ok ok ok, what is Mustard Plug?

Evildoers Beware An awesome ska/punk band from Michigan. I can rarely find anyone who knows of them. I have all their albums and they just rock!I first heard of them back when I was in SO12. Zales and I spent hours trying to get their song “You” down on paper so the band could play it. To this day, that song is still one of my faves.

I have yet to see them live, hopefully one day. One cool trivia fact. Their album “Pray for Mojo”, the title comes from the Simpsons. Krusty’s monkey is named Mojo, and he types stuff on the keyboard, well he gets boozed and drugged up, and all he can type on the keyboard is “Pray for Mojo” – hilarious!

Not sure what I am doing tonight, but hopefully I will have some green beer. I just watched the Boondock Saints

“Everyone is Irish on St. Patty’s Day”

So, everyone go out tonight and celebrate the holiday that is all about green and drinking.

Jury Duty – Day 1

Man, Jury Duty. So, first off, I forgot to call in yesterday (you are supposed to call in every night after 5 PM to figure out if you need to come in). So, I called in this morning. 7:10. Be there by 7:30. Dang. Rush, rush, get down, park in the ramp, get to courthouse. I’m like the 10th person there, out of 30.

8:00, around 24 people there. Watch a little juror movie, and wait, wait, wait, for 3 hours, for the big call. Then we go through, they count us through every door, walk down below the street in the underground tunnels. Nothing like at the capital in D.C. or anything, more like something you and your buddy would do between your houses, well, no hanging light bulbs and boards over puddles, but nothing extravagant.

So we finally get to the court room. Oh yeah, nothing extravagant here either. Kind of looks like a set on a high school play, something they would come up with for a court room. The defendant looks like, well, homeless or your drug dealing uncle who hasnt bathed in like, 2 weeks. And his buddy in the seats isn’t much better.

Judge tells us, “Driving withouth a license”. Woah – huge offense. Dude, just pay the fine! Anyways, they choose 20 random jurors from the 24. I wasn’t picked. So, more waiting. One girl said she forgot she had an appt at noon, with her lawyer. Judge lets her go. 23 left. They attorney’s question the jurors: “Have you seen Oprah?” “Know any cops?” “Hate the DMV?” “Ever had anyting but a speeding ticket?” “Citizen of Stearns County?” (the last one was asked at least 4 times throughout the day)

So, they throw away 7 juror’s and are left with 12. Time for me to go. 12:30. 5 hours of my life waiting. I felt almost like I was on American Idol, waiting in the lobby with Ryan Seacrest (Seacrest….out!) – but I never got my big chance in front of the judges (literally in my case). Woah, that last sentance had like 2 or 3 puns. I’m on a roll….

No clue how the trial turned out. Im betting 99% guilty, oh well, another day, another…  .27 cents per mile and 20 dollars a day. Fun stuff!
